Do It

Volunteer at your local animal shelter, and turn your city into a No Kill zone.

Kirsten Browning

Day 15: I don't think I'll have to work very hard to "sell" this volunteer activity to anyone! Today I'll be attending an orientation at a local animal shelter (and we're scheduled to do "dog and cat practicals!"). It's easy to get involved: Visit, search by term (i.e. “animals”) and your ZIP code to find animal shelter opportunities near you. You should also try contacting your local humane society, animal rescue, or animal shelter, which you can locate by visiting the Shelter Pet Project, entering your ZIP code, and clicking "search."

Contact each group to find out what opportunities exist. Most organizations use volunteers for a variety of tasks, which could include anything from walking dogs to handling kittens to feeding baby birds! At Best Friends LA (where I'll be volunteering), I can assist with mobile pet adoptions, rescuing animals, and much more. For instance, you might want to help foster an animal until it can get adopted!
