More and more people are shopping at farmers markets these days. Over the last 10 years the number of farmers markets in the United States has actually doubled! But did you know that many small farms earn a large part of their living by hosting events on the farm?
Agritourism is the addition of tourism attractions (i.e. hay rides, corn mazes, pick-your-own fruits and vegetables, etc.) to a farm in order to attract more visitors or travelers. Yet, for many small farmers the agritourism means a whole lot more. It’s a way to generate supplemental income that supports the true purpose of the farm — to grow healthy food.
So find a local farm and pay them a visit. There's good food and good fun to be had. You might even learn something. And if you're feeling particularly ambitious you might even inquire about volunteer opportunities!
