Tell the Romanian Parliament to stop Cyanide-based Gold Mining in Transylvania

George T. Sipos

The long-term ecological disaster that cyanide-based gold mining will cause in the mountains of Transylvania and in the entire Europe has made hundreds of thousands of Romanians rise against their government and Gabriel Resources, Ltd., the Canadian corporation that owns the project. Romanians all over the world have now been protesting for more than five weeks.
Let's support their cause by signing this petition.

just went over to avaaz and signed. also checked out your site. really love the einstein and tolken quotations on your site. I also gather that this effort is hitting close to home for you. Have you started to see and feel the effects of these mining efforts?

Thank you so much, Ben, for your support! Every little bit helps.

And yes, I try to guide my life by those quotes that I put on the first page on my website. I am doing my best to effect change around me wherever I can. I am involved in several campaigns in Romania, including this one. Although I have been living in the US for 13 years now, I stay involved in my home country, I write a lot in local media, but also on my weblog,, I initiated an ethnic harmony project between the Romanian majority and the Rroma minority, as well as others which I shared here on Good.

As for the mining effects, no, there are no effects yet for this particular spot, because the project is on hold, although the prime-minister gave absolute rights to Gabriel Resources, Ltd. to exploit the gold mine (which, by the way, has been active since the Roman times). But, Romanians know very well what a cyanide spill means as it happened before at different sites:

Plus, for Romanians, the movement to Save Rosia Montana is also a signal of political and civic awakening. The movement #RomaniaRising considers itself a continuator of the Occupy Wall Street, the Arab Spring and the Turkish Summer. In fact, some international media outlets, such as Der Spiegel and CNN, have already called the protests (which started more than five weeks ago) the Romanian Autumn.

OK, I could talk about this for a long time, but I will stop here. :) But, please, if you need any more information on this, ask me or check the movement websites and social media pages. Here is also a publication put together by #RomaniaRising:

      Cheers, from Chicago.
