A few days ago a friend of mine asked me to teach her how to can her own homemade jam and I went over today to show her how. It's not a terribly difficult skill but many are reluctant to do it because fewer people do it than they used to (so probably it's really difficult, right - wrong). At the end of the day she asked me if there was anything she could teach me. I promised to think about it and get back to her. After that I rode to my Hindi teacher's house for a lesson. My teacher recently turned 91 and is still living independently. He often talks about how much he loves to teach. It gives him a sense of purpose, it keeps his brain challenged, and he likes the social outlet it provides.
And that's when my friend's answer presented itself to me (and now I'm suggesting it to you also). Teach it forward. Share a skill with a friend.
