Watch This Ethiopian Youth Group Raise Awareness About Safe Sex Through Dance

Ann Noon

December 1, 2013

Question: how do you get safe sex messages to young people in Ethiopia where cultural attitudes make sex a difficult issue to discuss?

Answer: form a fierce dance troupe, gather a crowd, and then share information on HIV prevention and testing. Addis Beza use their talents for music and dance to communicate serious health messages and to encourage members of the public to know their HIV status.

Globally young people aged between 15 and 24 account for 40% of new HIV infections worldwide. Arming young people with the knowledge they need to keep themselves safe is critical if we are serious about ending AIDS.

Ethiopia is one of five countries currently being targeted by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and its partners through Link Up, an initiative that aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of more than one million young people living with and affected by HIV.

Great video - so inspiring to see young people using their creativity to take on problems that governments and the establishment fail to address.

This is absolutely fantastic. Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, not only does this hit close to home for me, but seeing the creative approach that these youth have taken to tackle such a sensitive topic is amazing. Outreach and awareness efforts through innovative, artistic ways (like Addis Beza) are so effective and it's such a fantastic way to mobilize the youth to further engage more youth. Absolutely inspiring.

I love the work of Addis Beza. The fact that they're using culture and art to inform communities is innovative. I wonder how the idea originated- and did they work with groups like Aids Alliance to come up with such a creative form of education?
