November 1, 2013

Cuts in SNAP (food stamps) funding is set to take place on November 1, 2013. This is already in addition to the $39 billion in cuts that the House of Representatives passed on September 19 via the Farm Bill. To add insult to injury, the government shutdown will stall new applications for food stamps.

My 34-yr-old 70% disabled Army Veteran son and his two children, ages 10 and 9, live with me as do my 26-yr-old daughter and her (70% from the VA and 30% from the Army) Veteran husband and their three children, ages 5, and twins at 22 months. We are living off of my son's $350.00 month food card. We are lucky in that I have a large garden with my father and we can and freeze all that we are able to. My husband of 30 yrs and I are in a divorce due to his unstable personality (he is a 30% disabled Navy Veteran who should have a higher percentage if his mental health were to be evaluated). We are barely making it and won't be able to buy meat this next month. Thankful to all the dried beans and rice. I just want to say to the GOP, you are evil, evil people and if you believe in hell, like most of you Christians do, you are going there. The sooner the better.

This is so upsetting. My father relies on food stamps. I wonder how it will affect those that already are signed up?

@Alessandra Rizzotti - It looks as though there will be a bit of a reduction in the monthly benefit amount starting in November (around $40 for a family of 4, for example). Agreed, this is distressing. Hopefully this campaign will raise enough awareness to change something. With the rising costs of food, this reduction will be very challenging to deal with.
