A year ago, I started a http://lastoryworks.org/in-bloom-december-9-2012/ in my neighborhood. I curated it around themes like: Bizarre Cities, Love, Play, Exploration, and Neighbors. I'd like to start it back up. I think it was the best form of community building and networking I've ever done. I was able to connect with people because of intimate little details that they'd never divulge on the internet.
This particular show I did raised money for the cancer treatment of a puppeteering teacher of mine who played Mr. Snuffleupagus on The Muppets. The entire community of his students rallied together and performed, raising about $500 bucks that night in a tiny theater. Now, my teacher is on the upswing as he recovers. While it was a big endeavor to organize, making a small impact made it worth all the effort.
If you're unsure about how to start, I recommend going to a local http://themoth.org/ in your area.
