Participate in national service

In “Why National Service Should Be a Social Obligation,” Citizen Schools co-founder & CEO Eric Schwarz answers Gen. McChrystal’s call for more national service opportunities and asks us to contribute to a culture of service in America. And Schwarz knows what he’s talking about. At Citizen Schools, passion for service has made lasting change: through the 2-year Teaching Fellowship, recent college grads and young professionals educate middle school students in low-income neighborhoods across the country. Students show 10-15 percentage point gains in math and English, and graduate at a rate 20% higher than their matched peers. As John Murad, an NYPD officer & Harvard grad, said at Harvard’s 2013 Commencement, ”Success doesn’t mean rising to the top. It means changing the world.”
Read about Gen. McChrystal’s proposal and Citizen Schools service opportunities at To answer the call, join the AmeriCorps Fellowship, or sign up to volunteer with Citizen Schools next fall.
