No Teachers With Guns, No Police in Schools

Cynthia Liu

Sign the petition at the link -- tell Senator Boxer she's providing "bipartisan" cover for the NRA's agenda of more guns in schools.

More police officers in school, really? Not when we already have a serious problem with a schools-to-prison pipeline. More police on school campuses is a federally-firehosed solution in search of a problem. Let local school districts decide one by one if they want this. Guaranteeing a federal stream of funding will only create demand where none existed before.

This presents a larger problem. People can be trained to shoot a gun; however, that is altogether different from the combat training that would be needed to "assist" in these past situations when a mentally disturbed person has shot up an entire school or movie theatre. Teachers aren't going to be equipped to handle those types of situations for which the police and military are trained. Also, the paranoia would increase, maybe an innocent parent or some other innocent person would be shot when a teacher mistakenly felt threatened. Finally, the shooters in these past incidents would not have been swayed from their actions because someone else had a gun, too. The shooters didn't value their own lives. They shot everyone and killed themselves, too. So, scaring them off with a little shot gun is not the answer. We need stronger gun control laws.

I agree that this should be up to local school districts, and should not be mandated by the Federal government. However, I support the idea that trained and armed teachers should be able to carry a firearm.
