Do It

Make Cleaning Our Parks and Cities Fun

Dave Whiteside

I live in Waterloo, Ontario and I've always had a hard time understanding why people litter - it's just a thought process I'll never understand. But it did get me thinking: what are ways to bring people together to clean up our parks and streets without the stigma of saying "hey, let's get together and pick up garbage!"

This led to the start of what I call the "Waterloo Clean-Up Crew." The basic idea behind the group is simple - we get together, we go for a group run and we pick up garbage along the way. The three goals of the group are simple:

1. Staying healthy and active.
2. Meeting great new people.
3. Cleaning up our city.

The group is still young, but my hope is that through great networks such as GOOD, this is an idea that can spread outwards to other cities. After runs, groups can go out for food and drinks, bond, and build a lovely little community of people interested in keeping their city clean in fun ways.

Give it a go sometime, I promise you'll love it!

Dave, I love that you guys are doing this. It's a win-win situation for everyone. I have been trying this is my neighborhood but it's taking some time to get people on board. Here's to your continued success!

It's definitely not an easy thing to get people committed to - especially this time of year when everyone is off on vacation and doing their own thing. But good luck on your own endeavours! I'd really love to hear the things that are working and the things that are not as you keep trying it out!

Thanks, Alessandra! Things are still in the early stages and I'm still going through the motions in terms of figuring out the dynamics of it all, but I'll definitely post more as the idea continues to develop! Thanks for the support!
