If you live in a local community with a nearby forest, collaborative wood chopping can be a nice way to reduce the carbon footprint of your neighbourhood.
A hard days collective work can provide many households with wood for months of heating. You may also use the opportunity to clear trails.
In my neighbourhood (Landås, in Bergen, Norway) this is an annual event in the nearby forest. 10 % of the wood is given to elderly people in the community, the rest is shared among the volunteers.
