Learning the art of happiness

Abigail Ornellas

I have watched two TED talks recently that have focused on the topic of happiness: Shawn Achor, with "the secret to happy work", and David Steindl-Rasts' "Want to be happy? Be grateful".

Now, I have always been opposed to the idea that there is a formula for happiness. It felt too similar to the concept of a get rich quick scheme: follow these five steps and you will find happiness...

But what I am starting to learn is that happiness is an art that needs to be practiced - much like any good thing in life. Both talks are incredible and I highly recommend you watch them, but what stood out for me the most in both was the focus on gratitude, as a means to happiness.

So my 'to do' is this: Make a wall of gratitude. Use a chalkboard, black marker, whatever. Write down one new thing each day that you are grateful for. This list will build, from 1 to 7, 30, 365...

Live from a space of 'enough', rather than a space of 'scarcity', and be happy - it's one way of being wise.
