Day 11: Today I helped change the world by playing an app. No joke! A little game called Malaria Hunter uses crowdsourcing data to diagnose malaria. Here's how it works: first, download the app and learn to distinguish parasites from leukocytes. Then look at a few easy blood images (of real patients' blood) where you try your hand at diagnosing, and the game evaluates your progress. As you improve, you are given more complex images, and your results are combined with those of others and made immediately available in the cloud for advanced processing. With previous testing scoring a 60% false positive rate and rapid diagnosis so important to saving lives, this app serves a wonderful purpose -- plus, it's such a genuinely engaging, addictive game, you won't even realize you're working. Some tips: Zoom in when you're trying to tap on parasites, for increased accuracy. Also, you'll need to aim for a higher than 90% accuracy rating each time, so choose carefully! Happy hunting.
