I'm lucky to live in a city like Portland, Oregon where there are all sorts of opportunities to become a better literary citizen, from a kickass bookstore to LitHop to little free libraries. As much of a word nerd I am, I walk by these public boxes full of books and poems all the time but never participate. The other day, I decided to change that. I printed out a poem by a beloved local and placed it in a poetry box on a random street corner by my house. My hope is that someone will stop, read it, and want to go home and read more.
