LGBT people face a disproportionate share of the HIV epidemic throughout Tanzania bearing a greater burden of the epidemic relative to the general population. In Tanzania, the HIV risk to LGBT is exacerbated by social, cultural, and political factors. A major factor is cultural bias or stigma against LGBT, making it difficult for LGBT to obtain adequate medical information and services for preventing and treating HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). This situation is compounded by adverse human rights environments: sections 154-157 of the penal code criminalize homosexuality and make same-gender sexual relationships illegal. Therefore, LGBT fail to seek treatment because doing so leads to harassment, refusal of services, discrimination and even violence. Hostile conditions push LGBT Tanzanians underground, making them extremely difficult to reach.
