Growing up as a 90s kid, I can proudly say that I was raised on a new wave of digital technology. Technological advances that had only been conceptualized within sci-fi, were now available in reality; Captain Kirk & the fleet of the Enterprise wouldn't be the only ones with 'communicators' anymore. Less proudly, however, I can also say that I am apart of the generation where, while the promise of technology was that it would bring us closer together, as I grew up, I saw my peers and I becoming a community of individuals who, while connected, remained disconnected.
Today, technology has given us more time to do & to be, yet we seem unable to use this extra time on the original reasons that we wanted the spare hours for in the first place. We spend hours 'talking' to people, through texts, e-mails, blogs, and still we never hear another person's voice. So the next time you have some news to share, give someone a quick ring. It's time to start getting closer to each other again.
