GOOD Manners

GOOD is a community, and is its platform to convene, connect, inform, and empower us. To make sure that our community contributions continue to be engaging and clear, there are a few simple ground rules.

Be yourself

We encourage you to use your real name, and sign up for only one account. Creating a bunch of extra accounts to vote and comment on your contributions isn’t allowed.

More importantly, GOOD is a place to connect with people you respect — use your real name and others can get to know you as someone they respect as well.

Not for sale

Got something you’re especially proud of that you’d like to promote? If it makes sense within the topic to which you’re submitting it, go for it.

However, blatant advertising, spam, and post duplications aren’t the name of the game. If we see a post that feels like an infomercial, we’ll take it down. Additionally, any contributions that appear to be bot-generated will result in immediate account suspension.

Don’t play games

We use various tools and algorithms to make sure the best community content makes it into the spotlight. Those algorithms aren’t that difficult to figure out, but attempting to game the system to unfairly promote your contributions isn’t cool — and we’ll likely notice, and take your contribution down.

Keep it relevant

Even the best-intentioned contribution isn’t going to hold much value out of context. For instance, if you post a thoughtful comment about sustainable seafood in the middle of an online privacy discussion, it will likely be removed.

Flame off

While we welcome you to engage in lively debate, don’t make it personal. No bullying, no flaming, and no finger pointing. Everyone’s opinion is valid, and everyone should feel welcome to contribute to the GOOD site conversation. Please do your part to welcome newer members!

Keep it clean

We agree the occasional, well-placed expletive can really drive home a point. And images don’t have to be puritanical as long as they support a contribution. But pornography, blatant profanity, or anything illegal is obviously out.

Credit and copyrights

Just like any other site, don’t contribute any copyrighted or trademarked materials if you’re not the owner. Also, be sure to properly credit any quote, link or Creative Commons-type artwork you use.

Content curation

We reserve the right to modify, edit, refuse or reuse anything you contribute. Specifically, we may occasionally edit out inappropriate content from an otherwise outstanding comment. The good news is, we also may take a thread you’ve started and put it on our homepage.

Raise the flag

For any community-contributed content, you should see a small flag icon somewhere on the page. If you run across anything on our site that doesn’t jive — be it spam, bullying or just plain inappropriate — please let us know.

Taking a time out

If you blatantly disregard these guidelines, we’re going to temporarily suspend your account and give you a heads up. Continued offenses will result in the permanent removal of your account and all your related activity.

Contribute like you give a damn

More than anything, use your common sense and good manners. If you’re familiar with the vibe, you know what’s right and wrong. Thanks for continuing to contribute and collaborate with your GOOD community.

Questions and feedback are always welcome. A great place to start is at our GOOD Help Desk.
